Careless Cooking at Dorann Manor |

December 16th
- While members from the department were up the station
hanging out for the annual kids Christmas party around
2100hrs a call came into the county fire board, for an
alarm system at Doran Manor Apartments on Broadway in
Westville. Engine Company 733 and Ladder Company 736
respond immediately with 12 personal led by Assistant
Chief Farley and Captain Mike Miller. Upon the arrival
of the companies, Assistant Farley sized up the building
as a 3 story masonry apartment complex with nothing
showing, alarm had been sounding, with some of the
residents still evacuating. Engine crews went to the
apartment of origin and found a pot of meat on the
stove, and began checking for extension into the
apartment, while the ladder crew went to work with
ventilation. Command requested that unit maintenance be
contacted and FM 702 be added to the card for the
investigation, the ladder company returned while the
engine and FM stayed on location for maintenance, with

Engine And Ladder On 3rd
Alarm In Gloucester City |

December 12th-
Around
0040 hrs. On December 13, 2006 Camden County
Communications began receiving calls for a
building fire on the corner of Broadway and Essex
Sts. In Gloucester City. Communications transmitted
the box bringing District 5 (Gloucester City),
Ladder Co. 736, and Engine 45 (Mt. Ephraim) as well
as ALS and BLS units from Camden City with incoming
reports of people trapped. Battalion 504 arrived to
find the location of fire to be the Pirates Den Bar
with heavy smoke pushing from the #3 Floor. Command
asked for the all-hands to be transmitted as well as
the 2nd Alarm due to reports of occupants
still trapped.
Squad Co. 51 was
attempting to make there way up into the 3rd
Floor as the fire began to break through the roof
line. Ladder Co. 736 was on the way with 6, upon
their arrival, they were ordered to set up on the
A-D Corner and set up to go in-service. As companies
where arriving and setting up to go to work, Squad
Co 51 was still trying to make an aggressive push to
gain control of the well advanced fire, as
conditions where quickly deteriorating on the inside
and a negative search so far, Command ordered the
evacuation of the building and all companies perform
a PAR check, as companies where performing there PAR
check, one member came up missing, but was quickly
located outside the building and safe.
Crews began an exterior
attack, the 3rd Alarm was dispatched
bringing Engine Co. 733 into the job, the Engine
accessed the job from division C and hand stretched
400’ of supply line to Squirt 54 on the C-D Corner.
Ladder Co. 736 and Engine Co. 733 worked the
Division D side of the building performing
ventilation and working the Ladder Pipe as multiple
other master streams worked the other sides of the
building. One member of Ladder Co. 736 was
transported to UMH in Woodbury for a minor arm
injury and one occupant of the building was also
transported for smoke inhalation. Crews from
Westville remained on scene until approx. 0400 hrs.
When they where released by Command. No other
injuries where reported. The Camden County Fire
Marshals Office is investigating the fire.

2 Vehicle MVC W/Entrapment |

December 5th
-
At around 1200(noon) Companies from Westville, Woodbury,
and National Park were dispatched to the intersection of
Route 45 and Olive Streets in Westville for a
Motor Vehicle Crash w/ Entrapment. Upon the arrival of
Rescue Company 73 and Squad 73 crews reported a 2
vehicle MVC, involving a Comcast cable truck and luxury
car, with the cable truck on its side, with one
entrapped in the Comcast truck.
The patient was wedged between the roof and the seats of
the vehicle, the patient was conscious and alert and
speaking to the emergency workers.
Crews then went to work securing the vehicle with struts
and began the removal of the roof to safely remove the
patient from the vehicle, Squad 73 transported the
patient to the local trauma center for evaluation.
There were no firefighter injuries reported and the
Companies were available while Westville Detectives
investigated the crash.

3rd
-
At approx. 15:50hrs Taskforce 5 was dispatched to 71
Packard Ave for a structure fire. Chief Murtaugh
(Westville) signed on en-route with a heavy columns from
Westville(3 miles away). City P.D. units were out with a
detached garage fully involved. Chief Gismondi (N. Park)
arrived with heavy fire showing and 2 exposure problems.
While en-route Engine 511 came across a working vehicle
fire at the corner of Broad & Barber. They advised the
County Fire Board and passed that job onto the 2nd due
companies of the initial box assignment. On arrival
Engine 511 grabbed its own water supply, and led off
with (1) 1 3/4 line to start knocking down the fire.
Ladder 736 arrived and checked both exposures for
extension. Engine 733 and Rescue 738 also on scene. The
fire was held to just the garage with minor damage done
to both exposures. Ladder 516 arrived at the vehicle
fire with Engine 811 and operated with (1) 1 3/4 line.
Both fires are under investigation by the City Fire
Marshal.

Around 5:30 pm Companies
were dispatched to 408 Broadway (the Dorann Manor
Apartments) for a reported kitchen fire. Engine Company
733 arrived to find the building evacuated, and
nothing showing. With further investigation crews found
a small fire resulting from careless cooking, that
extinguished prior to arrival of the engine company.
Crews went in services with positive pressure and the
remaining companies were ordered to stage and send the
manpower forward. Crews remained on scene until the
smoke was clear there were no reported injuries.

Early Morning Kitchen Fire In Woodbury |

November 30th
-
At Around 0730hrs Companies were dispatched to 82 Hess
Street, for reported kitchen fire, With police on location reporting working fire, Engine 511 and Ladder
736 arrived on location and went to work, making quick
work of the room and contents fire. The Ladder company
went to work venting to the dwelling while companies
from Engine 811 went to work checking for extension and
extinguishing any hot spots. Crews were on scene for a
little over an hour, while covers were secured and FM-5
preformed the investigation. There were no firefighter
injuries and crews went available.
While returning companies were dispatched
to the intersection of Broadway and Olive Street
(Westville) for a three car MVC, seeing that companies
were still on the street, companies arrived quickly and
began packaging the patients, and securing vehicles for
the tow. BLS 99 and BLS 69 transported two patients to
local hospital for the evaluation. Crews were available
with no injuries.

2 Vehicle Crash on State Highway 295 |

November 28th
-
Around noon
Westville Rescue Squad Co 738 and Squad 739
were dispatched to the area of Exit 25, Route 295,
southbound for a report of a pickup vs. a motorcycle
accident.
Chief Murtaugh and units arrived to find a motorcycle on
its side and a pickup off to the side. One victim was
located in the middle lane with a leg injury, and was
transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The N.J. State Police are conducting the investigation.

2 Alarm Fire for the Taskforce in National Park |

October 26th
-
Taskforce was alerted to a possible dwelling fire with
entrapment in National Park, on 300 New Jersey Ave.
between 3rd Street and North 4th Street. Upon police and
Fire Dept. arrival the all-hands was given immediately
at 12:48 due to the extensive fire throughout the home.
Engine 8-11 went right to work pulling off 1 3/4 hand
lines in attempt to suppress much of the flames on the
A-Side of the dwelling as well as the B-side.
Ladder Company 5-16 arrived quickly after and began
making some progress on the D-side of the home, by
pulling handlines stretching supply lines and opening up
on the D-side of the Home. Westville was also on
location immediately and sent their crews to help
National Park and Woodbury extinguish much of the fire
on the A, B, C, and D-side of the house. The flames
ripped throughout much of the home causing extensive
damage and heat for the firemen on location.
The all-hands given brought in companies from West
Deptford, Bellmawr (Fast Team), Mt. Ephraim, Audobon,
and cover companies from Thorofare, Woodbury Heights,
and Deptford as well as other companies from Camden
County. Firefighters quickly made a knock on the fire
and put the bulk of the fire out around the 40 minute
mark. After the arrival of police, it was confirmed that
their were no occupants inside of the home and that they
were all safely outside.
No serious injuries occurred while
crews operated at the scene and the cause of the fire is
under investigation by the Gloucester County Fire
Marshal

Ladder 736 Responded on Friday the Thirteen to
Paulsboro |

October 13th
-
Firefighters were alerted around 3:30
p.m. for a report of a fire at 12 W. Jefferson St.
The first-arriving engine led off with a hand-line to
find heavy fire conditions on the first floor. Personnel
reported that they could hear the fire making progress
above them at that time. Command then ordered two more
hand lines placed into service. At this time command
requested Ladder 736 and Engine 511 into the job from
the cover at Station 21-1. When crews arrived they
were ordered to begin venting the roof and setup ground
ladders. Command soon reported that the fire had spread
to all levels of the dwelling. Crews operated inside for
approximately 45 minutes before command sounded the
emergency evacuation signal. Switching to a defensive
operation, master streams were set up and placed into
operation.
The blaze reached three alarms as extensive mutual aid
companies were called to the scene. The fire was placed
under control at the 90-minute mark. No injuries were
reported on the fire ground. The fire is under
investigation at this time.

Ladder Company 736 responded to Taco Bell for
the Building |

-
During the late afternoon on
Wednesday, October 4, Ladder Company 736 was were
dispatched to the Brooklawn Taco Bell for a reported
building fire. Workers reported that their had been a
fire on the roof, but was extinguished. Upon arrival,
crews found fire on roof and went into operation. Crews
worked to open a section of the roof to locate hidden
pockets of fire and a quick work was made of the
remaining fire. Companies from Bellmawr
Park, Brooklawn and Woodbury assisted at the scene.Crews operated for approximately one hour, with no
injuries.

Taskforce 5, makes quick work of basement job in
City's West End |

September 4th
-At
17:40 Gloucester County Communications Center dispatched
Task Force 5 to 419 West Centre Street for a reported
dwelling fire. The home owner advised County that he had
smoke coming from the basement of the home. 501, 503,
801, 7301 arrived almost immediately and reported that
there was light smoke coming from the basement area.
511 with a crew of 6 arrived quickly with medium smoke
showing from the B, and C side of the dwelling with
orders to stretch an 1 3/4" hand line into the basement
to find the seat of the fire, and establish a water
supply. The fire was found to be in a plastic container
with scrap wood and saw dust that had ignited, quick
work was made of the fire and there was no further
extension into the house. Crews proceeded to ventilate
the house which was now charged with smoke. Units on
location 511, 516, 527, 736, 733, and 811. No injuries
were reported and the task force was cleared by 18:15.
Unknown on the cause of the fire.

Squad 739 Respond To Deptford Township to treat
Trauma Patient |

September 1st
-At
11:36 p.m. Squad 739 was dispatched to Clements Bridge
Road to assist Deptford ESU (Squad 993, 995 and
991) Deptford Fire Dept. (Engine and Rescue 9-3) and
Life Support 1 (Underwood Hospital MICU).Where they were
dispatched to for a report of a motor vehicle accident.
Gloucester County Communications informed all responding
units that multiple calls were being received reporting
a serious crash with multiple injuries and two people
ejected. Upon the arrival of squad 995 and the EMS
supervisor an update was given on a single-vehicle vs.
utility pole, with two people in the roadway and the
scene being located just before the Camden County border
on Clements Bridge Road. Within a minute, the supervisor
reported back that there was a total of four trauma
victims - Two ejected, one still in the vehicle and one
heavily entrapped in the vehicle and unconscious. EMS
command requested a total of four BLS and four ALS units
to respond. The additional BLS was provided by Squad 739
and ALS support came by way of Medic 44 and 46 (Virtua
MICU) out of Camden County. Rescue 938 arrived and had
the trapped victim extricated in 15 minutes, while
Engine 934 assisted and provided fire protection. All
patients were loaded and transported with ALS to Cooper
Trauma Center with multiple injuries and fractures. The
fire department provided lighting for the police
investigation and all units cleared the scene around
1:16 a.m.

Summit Ave Structure Fire |

August 16th
-During
the evening of August 31, 2006, at 7 p.m., Task Force 7
(Westville 7-3, and Woodbury 5-1) and National Park
(8-1) were dispatched to 601 Summit Ave. for a report of
a structure fire. While units were en route, Gloucester
County Communications informed them that police were
on-scene reporting a fully involved garage. As such, the
assignment was upgraded to all-hands. Engine Co. 733 was
first-due, and reported a 1-story, detached garage fully
involved, with a vehicle inside.
Woodbury and National Park assisted with the water
supply, fire suppression and overhaul. An additional BLS
unit was requested, bringing in Deptford ESU (Squad 995)
and the Camden County ISAT, as well as a FAST assignment
from Bellmawr (3-2). The incident was placed under
control within 15 minutes, and extensive overhaul was
needed. The fire is under investigation and no injuries
were reported.

Ladder Responds To Gloucester For All Hands |

July 18
-
Ladder 736 was dispatched for a report of a building
fire at 401 S. Broadway in Gloucester City, Camden
County, at around 1 a.m. Monday. Camden County Radio
informed units that an occupant came to the Gloucester
City Police Station and reported a fire at the Furniture
Store. Police arrived to find fire showing from the
roof. Command arrived and reported fire showing on the
roof and requested the all-hands. Crews went into
service with a hand-line to knock down the fire. Crews
then opened up and checked for extension. The fire was
placed under control around the 45-minute mark. The fire
is under investigation by the Camden County Fire
Marshal's Office.

New Rescue 738 Arrivals In Westville |

June 29
-Rescue
738 was delivered late Wednesday after noon to Station
73. The new Rescue is a 2006 E-ONE Cyclone II
rescue-pumper. It features a ten-man,
climate-controlled cab, with seating for eight, roll-up
doors (including the pump panel), a 1,500-GPM pump with
a 750-gallon tank, a generator, and a light tower.
This unit replaces a Ford/Marion rescue truck that was
recently purchased by Monroeville Fire Company, and a
1996 E-ONE pumper that was recently purchased by Mt.
Ephraim Fire Dept. The new Rescue 738 is white-over-red,
and has the same lighting as the station's engine and
ladder. The new unit, which was purchased from Guardian
Fire Equipment in Lansdale, Pa.
