Chief Newman's Last Ride
Friday, October 7, 2011 Over the past few weeks and months to come, something’s have been changing around 836 Broadway, in Westville. Recently the guys from USA Paint from Woodbury, have been working to paint and touch up some areas around the firehouse, recently working to seal and repaint the recent bubbling on the overhead doors. Today the guys from Charles Marandino LLC Concrete, replaced the failing concrete pad that connects Rescue 738's Bay to Broadway. The concrete was beginning to cave and become very dangerous. The guys also took care of some cracking sidewalks making it safer for the school children that use that sidewalk each day while walking to school, and other weak spots in the driveway aprons leading from the EMS building. In the future the company is looking to wrap up a Solar and Electrical Upgrade Project by late fall that has been held up by some state paperwork issues, that will allow the department to realign on mostly solar energy to power the fire department. All of these projects have been completed at no additional cost to the residents and all of these projects have been funded by fundraisers conducted by the department members.

Friday, September 30, 2011 The Officers and Members of the Westville Fire Department would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Family, Friends and Brother and Sister Firefighters on the passing of Battalion Chief Ronald "Ron" Newman (9101) of the Oak Valley Fire Company - Station 9-1. Chief Newman recently lost his long and hard fought battle with cancer. Thoughts and prayers also extended to the Bellmawr Park Vol. Fire Company where Ron had previously served and retired at the rank of Assistant Chief. Arrangements are as followed Newman, Chief Ronald "Ron", 48, of Oak Valley section of Deptford peacefully passed away on September 30, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Legacy The All-American Guy is how Ron will be fondly remembered. Raised locally in Oak Valley, Ron graduated from Deptford High School with the Class of 1981. For the past 30 years Ron has been affiliated with Fire Departments in the local area and since 1998; Ron has served as the Chief of the Oak Valley Fire Department. Ron worked for the past 23 years as a Mechanic for Classic Nissan. Ron thoroughly enjoyed the brotherhood that he shared with his fellow firefighters. Knowing that together they would work to keep the residents of their communities safe and that they would always lend a shoulder to lean on in times of need allowed Ron the feeling that these men and women were more than friends; they were family. A great day for Ron would have included strolling the shores of Ocean City with his daughter Josephine in search of the perfect seashell or knowing that through his dedication and hard work with the Fire Department that a person's life or home that was in danger of being lost to fire was saved. Family Ron is the beloved husband of Kathleen Newman (nee Gallagher); dear father of Josephine; brother of John Morrow and grandfather of 3. Farewell Service Relatives and friends are invited to attend Ron's viewing Thursday evening 6 to 9 PM and Friday morning after 9 AM in the McGUINNESS FUNERAL HOME, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury; where his Funeral Service will follow at 10 AM.
